Con base en la exploración a tres aproximaciones al mestizaje en la historia colonial de América Latina: La Mezcla de Razas en la Historia de América Latina de Magnus Mörner, El Mestizaje como Gesta de Juan Olaechea Labayen, y El Pensamiento Mestizo de Serge Gruzinski, este artículo tiene como propósito problematizar algunas de las limitaciones del arsenal lingüístico y conceptual con el que cuentan los historiadores para comprender el proceso del mestizaje. En esta medida, el ejercicio que se plantea es de tipo historiográfico, es decir, el objeto inmediato de análisis son estos tres textos, pero el horizonte en el que se configuran las preguntas desde las cuales se les va a interrogar son los términos de su explicación. Los objetivos específicos son: en primer lugar, ubicar la pregunta central de cada obra y su objetivo; segundo, identificar el concepto que elabora cada autor sobre el mestizaje. A partir de ahí se trabajan dos ejes: la relación entre mestizaje y aculturación y entre mestizaje y orden social, para finalmente explorar la problemática del trabajo del historiador a partir de la pregunta por las categorías con las que opera.

Based on the exploration of three approaches to crossbreeding in the colonial history of Latin America: Race Mixture in the History of Latin America by Magnus Mörner, El Mestizaje como Gesta by Juan Olaechea Labayen and La pensée métisse by Serge Gruzinski, the purpose of this article is to shed light on some of the limitations of the linguistic and conceptual tools available to historians to enable them to understand the crossbreeding process. Thus, the exercise proposed here is historiographical in nature since the immediate object of analysis is the three texts mentioned above. Nevertheless, the horizon on which the questions are formulated are the terms of the explanations themselves. The specific objectives are: firstly, to locate the central question in each work and its objective; secondly, to identify the concept elaborated by each author with respect to crossbreeding. Starting from there, the focus is placed on two main points: the relationship between crossbreeding and crossculturing and between crossbreeding and social order, in order to finally explore one of the dilemmas historians face by asking how they establish the categories with which they work.
